Devotion: “The Lord Will Renew Their Strength”

“I don’t know how I’m going to do it all.” “There’s too much on my plate.” “I wish I could, I just don’t have the time.” “I’m so tired.” “When is it ever going to stop?”

How often have you found yourself saying one of those things? In this day and age of one deadline after another, of so many things seeming to vie for your attention, of increased and mounting pressuring, it really isn’t that hard to feel overwhelmed. Every time it seems like we’ve got one thing under control another four get put on our plate, every time it seems as if we may finally be able to stop and take a breather something else seems to come up.

We want to be successful, we want to impress people, or, at the very least, we don’t want to let them down. We have obligations, we have responsibilities, and we can’t shirk them. This is just the way it is as we let the little stresses pile up until they become bigger stresses, as we try to take it all on until it just seems as if we’re losing ourselves in everything we are trying to do and be and get done.

In the end we end up getting pushed down further. At times it even feels like we are being pushed down by such a tremendous weight that’s going to break us.

Our God, He knows about the pressures that we face in our lives, He knows about the struggles that we have and the challenges that can pile up. He knows just how tired we can get and the stumbling block it can be for us. It’s why, in the words of the Prophet Isaiah, He tells us that “Even youths go tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:30 and 31) It’s why He reminds us that, though we may feel overwhelmed, He never does, (Isaiah 40:28) and that, through His Son, our blessed Savior Jesus Christ, He is there to take the burdens that weigh us down from us in the boundless love that He has for us. (Matthew 11:28-30)

Sometimes, in our lives, for as much as there might be on our plate, we need to take a moment. We need to sit back, lift our eyes to Heaven and raise our voices to God. He is, after all, the one who will supply all of our needs, (Philippians 4:19) we just need to come to Him in our search for peace, knowing, in faith, that He will take care of us, even if we don’t necessarily know how He will. He desires to be our refuge when we are weak, to be the rock that will lift us higher when we feel beaten down (Psalm 40:2-4) and when we trust in Him, we have the power of His might and an armor to put on so that we can face any and all challenges that come upon us. (Ephesians 6:10-17)

Don’t let the world or the things in it get to you. Everything in it is passing. It is fleeting as we move through it and beyond it. What may seem like too much today has the capacity to either become a passing memory or what we allow to define us as we move on to all of our tomorrows. Yes, we may wonder how we are going to end up making it through whatever it is that we may face, we may wonder how we are going to get out from under the weight that has pushed us down. But, even before we do wonder, we need to remember that, in the grace of our Lord and the love of Christ, in the power of the Spirit, we are more than conquerors. (Romans 8:37)

We have a God who cares for us. He is a God who wants us to live our lives in blessed freedom. So encompassing is that desire from Him that He was willing to sacrifice His only Son to grant us liberty from the wages of sin, death and the Devil that would so bind us in the chains of slavery. If He was willing, if He is able to do this, then how much greater is His power than those challenges and pressures that we face in our everyday life? We just need to take the time to bring these things to Him and trust that, according to His perfect will and timing, according to His perfect plan and desire, He will take them all from us.

Leave your struggles at the feet of our God, let your troubles rest at His throne, and pick up His lamp. When you do you will have a light to guide your way as you walk down the path of this world hand in hand with a God who is willing to carry you when you stumble and to remove all barriers that stand in the way of you getting to where He desires you to be.

Then shall you find the peace you so long for in the refuge of His wondrous grace and abundant mercy.

Lord, grant this unto us all.
